COMPUTER GENERATION

Computer is a great invention of science .It was invented by Charles Babbage and also know as father of computers. The term "computer" was first introduced in  1613.Now-a-days we use computer in every field of our life .
Computer is a general purpose device that can be  programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic and logical operations automatically .Modified define of computer is " an electronic device that manipulate information ,or data (store ,retrieve or process data ).The computer or classified on the basic of their generation .there are divided into 5 generation .

First generation(1942-55)
  • They are the fastest calculating devices of their time .
  • Bulky in size because they used thousands of vacuum tubes .
  • generate lot of heat and also consume lot of power .
  • Their hardware failed frequently because of the failure of vacuum tube .
Second generation(1955-64)
  • In this generation transistor replaced the vacuum tube .
  • transistors made them 10 times faster than 1st generation computer .
  • kept  in air -conditional room .
  • larger and faster primary and secondary memories .
  • they used batch operating system
  •  use programming language (FOR TAN,COBOL,ALGOL...)

Third generation(1964-75)
  • smaller in size
  • kept in air conditioner rooms
  • consume less power
  • more reliable , need less maintenance .
  • larger and faster primary and secondary memories .
  • their production was cheaper and easier .
  • there software were portable and use time-sharing operating  systems.
  • they support on-line computing
  • Minicomputers were introduced
  • scientific and commercial use
Forth generation(1975-89)
  • personal computer (PC) were smaller
  • no need of air-conditional (no ac for PC).
  • less power consuming
  • much faster and bigger primary and secondary memory
  • used GUI(graphical user interface)
  • used in offices and home computing
  • low price ,affordable by individual ownership
  • they were networked so allowed distributed computing
Fifth generation(1989 - till now)
  • portable PC(notebook and laptops)
  • more faster mainframe computers.
  • consume optimal power
  • Internet based computing
  • more user friendly
  • very versatile as they can  be used in every walk of the life .
